Volleyball Falls in Four

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont University Volleyball Program (11-17, 5-9 MVC) faced Southern Illinois (15-10, 7-7 MVC) for the second time this season. The Bruins fell in four to the Salukis.
 
How it Happened
 
Belmont got off to a hot start in the first. With back-to-back blocks, the Bruins took a quick 5-2 lead. Elizabeth Godfrey later served up an ace to push Belmont's lead to 17-13. Ally Peterson had the hot hand down the stretch with two kills to keep Belmont in front. The Bruins remained in control and took set one 25-17. 
 
Southern Illinois came out strong in set two and jumped to an 8-14 lead. The Bruins put together a 4-0 run capped off by a kill from Peterson to make it 12-14. Despite the Bruins' run, the Salukis regained momentum and went on to claim the second 22-25.
 
Set three was a back-and-forth battle to start. The Bruins went on a 3-0 run sparked by a kill from Sydney Willis to even the score at 15 all. SIU later put together a run of their own to push the lead to 17-22. Brooke Gilleland and Peterson added a pair of kills to keep Belmont alive, but the Bruins ultimately fell in the third 21-25.
 
The Bruins came out swinging in the fourth. Gilleland and Peterson rattled off three kills each to help Belmont take a 12-9 lead. Both teams continued to trade points the rest of the way. Lilly Lutz added an ace to keep the Bruins alive at 22-24. SIU would go on to take the set and match 22-25.
