Belmont Softball Sweeps the Day at the Governors Classic

The Bruins Record 15 hits with the First Triple of the Season

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn-- Belmont University Softball defeated both Dayton 9-4 in 8 innings and a 2-0 win over host team Austin Peay State. 

Maya Johnson shined in the circle today against Dayton with 17 strikeouts for her career high against the Flyers. 

How it Happened: Game 1
The Bruins scored first on the day in an exciting 9-4 8 inning victory over the Flyers. Kaley Varner and Nicole Hughes each stole a base, Hughes scored on the throw to Varners stolen base. 

Abi Ledbetter posted a 2 RBI single to go up 3-0 over Dayton in the sixth.

The Flyers came back in the seventh to tie and send the game into extra innings. 

No sweat for the Bruins as they posted six runs in the eighth to secure the win. 

Hughes reached on a throwing error bringing the placed runner on second home to take the lead back. Brenna Blume and Emily Cockrill singled, Kailey Brown doubled, and Ledbetter tripled to secure the insurance. 

Ledbetter's triple was the first of the season for the Bruins and her second career. 

Dayton attempted to come back by adding a run but it was no match for the Bruins fantastic six run eighth inning. 

How it Happened: Game 2 
The Bruins battled in their second game of the day against Austin Peay to take the 2-0 win over the host team. 

Belmont scored their back to back runs in the top of the sixth. Kaley Varner, Hughes, and Green each posted a single to get the Bruins on the board. 

Austin Peay attempted a comeback as well. The Governors loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh. Belmont's Kristen Green closed out the game with an impressive catch in center field.
