STARKVILLE, Miss. - - Belmont University men's tennis dropped a 6-1 decision at No. 18 Mississippi State Saturday from A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
Alfred Wallin added to his growing resume of impressive victories, recording a convincing 6-4, 6-1 triumph over nationally-ranked and All-SEC player Carles Hernandez.
Wallin's heroics underscored quality play against one of the nation's best teams.
Belmont had proven to be extremely strong in doubles in three straight matches versus SEC competition, including consecutive doubles points at Ole Miss.
And while the Bulldogs earned the point with wins at second and third doubles,
Marko Ilic and
Riccardo Trione were leading the 26th-ranked pair of Hernandez and Nemanja Malesevic when play was called.
Trione,
Ian Cruz and
Tomas Luis all acquitted themselves well and displayed moments of flair before dropping matches.
Jack Randall impressively won his first serve over Michal Novansky at No. 6 singles before falling in three sets.
Belmont (7-5) returns to action Thursday vs. Dartmouth. First serve is set for 1:30 p.m. from the Belmont Tennis Complex.
