NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Behind a complete game shutout from their ace, Andy Bean, the Belmont University baseball team collected their first Missouri Valley Conference win in program history with a 2-0 victory over Illinois State on Friday at E.S. Rose Park.Â
Bean scattered just two hits and issued two walks across nine dominant innings, the first complete game shutout by a Bruin since Joshua South accomplished the feat on March 19, 2021, against SIUE.Â
It marks the third career complete game for Bean, who struck out 13 while allowing one earned run against UT Martin last season, and the fifth complete game shutout from a Bruin pitcher in a conference game since 2013.Â
The 2022 Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year made a splash in Belmont's first-ever Missouri Valley Conference contest, striking out six and breezing through nine innings on just 102 pitches.Â
Belmont (13-11, 1-0 MVC) played stellar, error-free defense behind Bean, helping limit traffic on the basepaths.Â
Offensively, Belmont threatened early, putting two men on in each of the first, second, and third innings, but came away with out any runs on all three occasions.Â
In the fifth, Jack Rando advanced to second base on an error from the Illinois State shortstop, then stole third. A Jeff Clarke double to left field brought in Rando and gave Bean and Belmont a 1-0 advantage.Â
The Bruins added an insurance run in the eighth, again taking advantage of a Redbird error when Blake Barton got safely aboard to second base and got to third base with one out on a passed ball.Â
Brodey Heaton recorded his 126th career RBI with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Barton and giving Belmont a 2-0 lead going into the ninth inning.Â
