Softball Falls to the Sycamores in First Meeting of the Series

Belmont Tallies Four Hits on the Day in 10-1 Loss

NASHVILLE, Tenn.-- Belmont University Softball dropped the first game of the series to the Indiana State Sycamores in a 10-1 six inning run rule.

How it Happened
Starting pitcher Maya Johnson began the first with two strikeouts against the Indiana State Sycamores. A three up three down inning for the Bruins with a fly out to Kristen Green at center field. 

The Sycamores posted the first runs of the day on a two RBI home run past center field for Cassie Thomerson. 

In her first career start as the designated player, Kylie Cunningham, posted an RBI single to score Abi Ledbetter who doubled earlier in the inning, 2-1. 

Indiana State added to their lead in the third with three runs to go up 5-1 over the Bruins. A double and single scored the Henning sisters. An additional RBI single to score the pinch runner Hannah Welch. 

Ellie Giles entered the circle for the Bruins in the fourth adding a strikeout and a walk to her name. A single, hit to center field scored Kaylee Barrett in the fourth, 6-1. The Sycamores loaded the bases on two outs but were unable to capitalize further on a force out from Nicole Hughes to Kaley Varner. 

The Bruins put two runners in scoring position in the fourth but were unable to bring them home to lessen the deficit. 

An RBI single up the middle from Hannah Barrette added the seventh run of the day for the Sycamores. A three RBI double from Thomerson brought the Sycamores to 10 runs on the day. 

Kaley Varner posted a single in the sixth in hopes to bring in a run. 

Up Next: The Bruins will face the Sycamores in a rematch set for 2 p.m. CT at E.S. Rose Park. The matchup will be streamed on ESPN3.
