Baseball Edged in Series Finale by Indiana State, 5-3, on Sunday

Bruins Limited Offensively in Home Defeat to Sycamores

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Jeff Clarke homered in the ninth inning as part of a Bruin comeback attempt, but the Belmont University baseball team dropped their series finale with Indiana State, 5-3, on Sunday at E.S. Rose Park.

It marks the first time since 2018 that Belmont has been swept at home in a conference series, and marked the tenth win in a row for Indiana State (22-12, 11-1 MVC).

Belmont (19-18, 5-7 MVC) was limited offensively to six hits, with one run coming in the first inning and two runs coming on Clarke's homer in the ninth inning.

Trailing 5-1 in the ninth, Blake Barton drew a tough walk before Clarke homered to right-center field with one out, making it 5-3 in favor of the Sycamores.

Back-to-back singles from Sam Kirkpatrick and Max Jones put the tying run on base, but the next two Bruin batters were retired to end the game.

The game was tied 1-1 until the fifth inning, when Indiana State scratched across the go-ahead run to lead, 2-1.

The score remained 2-1 until the eighth inning, when Indiana State took advantage of a catcher's interference call and a two-out two-RBI single to break the game open.

Jordan Zuger (L, 2-4) pitched solidly in his ninth start of the season, limiting Indiana State to two runs through four innings with four strikeouts.

Will Pryor tossed three innings while allowing one unearned run and punching out five Sycamores.

Jeff Clarke finished 2-for-3 on the day with the home run, his fifth of the season.

Belmont committed three fielding errors on the day.
