Softball Drops Final Game of the Series to the Sycamores

NASHVILLE, Tenn.-- Belmont University Softball fell 7-3 in the rubber match against the Indiana State Sycamores. A five run fourth inning from the Sycamores makes the difference in today's meeting. 

On the week the Bruins produced 18 hits for six runs. Emily Cockrill led the week with four hits, one homerun, one double, two RBI, and eight total bases. The Belmont pitching staff posted 34 strikeouts to their opponents 24, 28 came from Maya Johnson. 

How it Happened 
Maya Johnson earned the start in the circle today with two three up three down innings to start the Bruins off. 

The Sycamores found strength against Johnson this weekend as they earned their first run of the day in the third inning on an RBI double from Danielle Henning. 

Kennedy Sade added to the Sycamores lead with a solo home run to start the fourth inning. Indiana State loaded the bases on a hit by pitch and two walks. Danielle Henning earned her second RBI of the day on a single, followed by a three RBI stand up double from Isabella Henning put the Sycamores up 6-0. 

Leadoff hitter Emma Barnes walked to start the fifth inning. Kristen Green followed with a single to put two on for the Bruins. A single sent up the middle from Emily Cockrill posted her 15th RBI of the season and put Belmont on the board. 

An RBI single from Abi Chipps added the final run of the day for Indiana State in the sixth inning. 

In an attempt to rally the Bruins posted two runs in the sixth. A sacrifice bunt from Kaley Varner scored Abi Ledbetter who singled earlier in the inning. Along with a ground out from Baie Ensio to score Nicole Hughes, 7-3. 

Up Next: The Bruins will host the Battle of the Boulevard against the Lipscomb Bisons Wednesday, April 19. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. CT.
