Softball Falls to Missouri State in a Competitive Matchup

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.-- Belmont University Softball dropped the first game of the series 5-3 to the Missouri State Bears in a competitive contest Friday night. 

Emily Cockrill had a perfect day in the box with a double, a single, and a walk in the box. Emma Summers pitched the entirety of the game to add three strikeouts to her season total of 89. 

How it Happened
The Bruins held a 0-0 score through three innings, the Bears were the first to score on an RBI single from their pitcher Mackenzie Chacon for an unearned run. 

Belmont immediately countered in the fourth scoring two runs on a fielding error during Kylie Cunningham's at bat. Both Emily Cockrill and Nicole Hughes singled to start the inning and were moved to scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Brenna Blume. 

Missouri State tied the game a two on a home run from Olivia Krehbiel. An RBI single later in the inning gave the lead back to the Bears. 

Blume sent a double to the wall to score Emily Cockrill to tie the game once again for the Bruins. 

The Bear's McKenzie Vaughan posted a two run homer to finalize the scoring for the day and earn the victory over the Bruins. 

Up Next: The Bruins will face the Bears in the second game of the series at Killian Softball Complex at 2 p.m. CT.
