MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - - Belmont women's soccer (1-1) squared off against in-state foe Middle Tennessee (MTSU) (1-0-1) at Dean A. Hayes Stadium, on Sunday, August 20. The Blue Raiders scored twice in the second half, and fended off the Bruins, by a score of 3-1.
MTSU found the back of the goal first, in the 18
th minute. Emma Pettersen capped off the odd man attack with her first goal of the season, assisted by Cambell Kivisto.
The Bruins kicked it into gear midway through the half. Senior
Maci Pekmezian found junior
Leah Firsdon, who fired it to the top-right corner of the goal, from the edge of the 18-yard box, to tie it at 1-1.
The Blue Raiders had a prime scoring opportunity before the half, but goalkeeper
Sarah Doyle denied Elizabeth Slavinsky, to keep the match even going into the locker rooms.
Early second half play consisted of few scoring opportunities for either team. Doyle continued to make saves in goal, finishing the night with six. MTSU broke the tie in the 70
th minute, on a goal from Faith Adje, assisted by Caroline Manley, going up 2-1.
MTSU added another goal in the 90
th minute by Kivisto, assisted by Kaitlyn Butcher.
What's Next
The Bruins return to action Thursday, August 24, against Eastern Kentucky. The match is slated for 3 p.m. CT, from Richmond, Kentucky, at EKU Soccer Field.
