NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Sophomore forward
Brock Kiper scored on a first-half header in as many matches and the Belmont University men's soccer team earned its first draw of the fresh season with a 1-1 tie against visiting Florida Atlantic Sunday evening at E.S. Rose Park. Extending their home unbeaten streak to 20, the Bruins (1-0-1) nearly kept the Owls' offensive attack out of the net, but a 75th-minute goal evened the match.
Â
Less than 76 hours after FAU (1-0-1) scored six goals at rival Lipscomb, who is receiving votes in the preseason national coaches poll, Belmont was able to stifle the Owls.
Â
Junior goalkeeper
Grant Calvert was excellent between the pipes, staving off six FAU shots on goal and making a pair of remarkable saves.
The Bruins had two early chances before Kiper capitalized on Belmont's build in the 31st minute. Junior midfielder
Rubyn Singh Gill delivered a pass to senior midfielder
Michael Saunders on the right flank, who fed in a beautiful ball towards the left post from deep. A charging Kiper laid out for Saunders' feed and connected on the diving header for the go-ahead goal.
Three of the Bruins' four shots in the first half were on goal.
Â
Strong play in the first 15 minutes of the second half saw Belmont control the field and Saunders came within inches of giving the Bruins a 2-0 lead in the opening minute. Graduate forward
Case Cox found Saunders in the six-yard box and a strike off Saunders' leg was barely sent high by the Owls' keeper, Rotem Fadida.
Â
Four shots on target by FAU in 15 minutes of play from the 62nd minute onward led to the Owls' eventual goal. Calvert saved the first three before touches from midfielder Leo Keller and defender Tom Abrahamsson led to a tap-in by FAU forward Victor Claudel in front of the net.
Â
Saunders and Cox had clean looks in the 85th minute but both attempts went wide right. A corner kick from graduate midfielder
Jansen Wilson in the waning seconds was to no avail.
Â
The Owls had 14 shots for the evening with seven on target, including four of their seven second-half shots being on goal.
Â
Belmont finished with nine total shots but Saunders' near miss was the only one on target of the Bruins' five second-half shots.
Â
Both teams earned four corner kicks in the second half.
