NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont University Volleyball Program (9-10, 3-2 MVC) took on Illinois State (4-12, 2-2 MVC) to finish the weekend. The Bruins were swept by the Redbirds.
How it Happened
Brooke Gilleland and
Laura Shoopman got things started for Belmont in the first. The pins combined for two quick kills to give the Bruins an early lead. Illinois State later went on a run with two straight aces from Aida Shadewald to give the Redbirds the lead at 7-12. The Redbirds would hold on to their lead the rest of the way as the Bruins struggled to get things going offensively. Belmont eventually dropped set one 17-25.
Illinois State ran with the momentum from the first to start the second set. Belmont continued to try and find a rhythm while Shoopman kept swinging big for the Bruins. The right side recorded four kills in set two. The Bruins ultimately fell 14-25 in the second.
Belmont brought the fight in set three. Although the Bruins trailed in the beginning of the set, the team was able to take a late lead at 18-16 off a kill from
Sydney Willis and a couple Redbird errors. The rest of the set was a back-and-forth battle. Gilleland put up two big swings to give the Bruins an edge at 24-22. Despite the strong effort from Belmont, Illinois State regained control at the end to finish the set and match 24-26.
