Memphis Escapes Rose Park with 1-0 Win Over Bruins

Late First-Half Set-Piece Goal the Difference Tuesday Night

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Returning to E.S. Rose Park and the Music City after playing five of its last six matches on the road, the Belmont University men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to the University of Memphis Tuesday night in non-conference action. A 39th-minute goal on a free kick proved to be the difference for the visiting Tigers (5-4-1), who snapped the Bruins' seven-match home unbeaten streak.

Belmont (2-5-3) had plenty of chances to even the score in the second half but was unable to find the back of the net.

After being outshot 6-1 in the first half and conceding four shots on goal, the Bruins tallied eight second-half shots with three on target. Notably, junior defender Dylan Steely had several headers in the box in the final 26 minutes, including placing two on goal.

Very early in the 83rd minute, senior captain midfielder AJ Chastonay had a clean look at goal but was unable to convert.

Belmont's last true opportunity came with just over 90 seconds left when junior midfielder Brad Dildy fed a ball high into the box for Steely.

Memphis took the lead late in the first half on an Anders Bordoy free kick from the right side of the penalty area.

The Tigers finished with 12 shots on the night, including five on target.

Unable to earn a corner kick in the first half, the Bruins had four in the second half. Memphis earned five corners in the match.

Graduate goalkeeper Grant Calvert made four saves.

Of Note
  • The loss is only Belmont's second at Rose Park in four seasons.
  • The Bruins have been defeated at home just three times since 2020.
  • Freshman midfielder Caleb Robertson made his first career start.
  • Redshirt freshman defender Dru Stanton played a career-high 54 minutes in his second-ever appearance.
