NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Wrapping up Hispanic Heritage Month, Belmont Athletics and the cheer program spotlight senior cheerleader
Ever Turcios and
baile folklórico.
Baile folklórico, or ballet folklórico, is "folkloric dance" in Spanish and refers to Mexican ballet folk dance.
Turcios is in his second year on the cheer team and a senior at Belmont University majoring in art education. Originally from El Salvador, Turcios moved to Nashville in 2015 when he was 13.
"Although I'm not Mexican, I love the Mexican culture and their traditions so I joined a Mexican folklórico group in 2018 where I met my dance partner," said Turcios. "The dance group split up a year later but I loved dancing folklórico so my dance partner and I decided to keep dancing as duo."
An interesting fact about folklórico is that the shoes worn while dancing have nails on the bottom to make the foot work sound louder. Turcios and his dance partner dance locally in Nashville at Plaza Mariachi, Cheekwood and Centennial Park. Earlier in October, Turcios and his dance partner performed on campus as part of Belmont's Hispanic Heritage Month celebration at the Bell Tower plaza.

The cheer team thought it would be fun for Turcios to share his love of folklórico and teach his teammate,
Lindsay Biggs, some steps. Check out Belmont cheer on Instagram to see how it went at
