FORT MYERS, Fla. – Behind 50 percent shooting from the field and a strong offensive first half, the Belmont University women's basketball team defeated Davidson College 69-59 Saturday in the third-place game of the 2024 Elevance Health Fort Myers Tip-Off Shell Division. The Bruins (3-4) got a career-high 18 points on 7-for-10 shooting and a team-best eight rebounds from senior forward
Carmyn Harrison inside Suncoast Credit Union Arena in Fort Myers, Florida.
Â
After the Wildcats (3-5) scored the first five points of the game in the opening minute, Belmont led from the 6:33 mark of the first quarter onward.
Â
Four different Bruins reached double figures and Belmont finished 26-of-52 from the floor. The Bruins scored 39 first-half points behind 58.6 percent (17-of-29) shooting after starting the late-afternoon contest 3-for-5 from beyond the arc.

Despite Belmont shooting a blistering 69.2 percent (9-of-13) in the first quarter, the Wildcats closed the gap with an 8-2 run to close the opening stanza. Â
Lay-ins from Harrison and sophomore guard
Jailyn Banks extended Belmont's lead back out to a dozen a little over 90 seconds into the second quarter. The Bruins then took their first 14-point lead at 31-17 on baskets from freshman guard
Sanaa Tripp and senior forward
Kendal Cheesman. After Davidson got within nine at 33-24 with just under three minutes to go in the first half, Belmont scored the final six points of the second quarter. A tip-in from Tripp put Belmont ahead 39-25 at the break.

Cheesman pushed the lead back out to 11 with a jumper in the paint, but the Wildcats continued to stick around. A layup from Davidson's Charlise Dunn made it a six-point affair at 47-41 with 3:10 to go in the third.
Â
An old-fashioned three-point play from La Chapell put Belmont in front 52-41 with 96 seconds remaining in the third and the Bruins took a nine-point, 52-43 lead into the final quarter.
Â
Harrison scored the first four points of the fourth quarter and a La Chapell layup kept Belmont comfortably ahead 60-50 with 6:22 left. However, the Wildcats made one final push midway through the fourth.
Â
A layup by Davidson's Dunn and a jumper by the Wildcats' Lienafa made it a six-point game at 60-54 with 3:32 remaining. The Bruins went right back to Harrison, who delivered with a basket, and Belmont scored eight-straight points to hold a 14-point lead at 68-54 with just under a minute to go.

Â
Davidson outscored the Bruins 34-30 in the second half as Belmont was held to 39.1 percent (9-of-23) shooting and went 0-for-4 from outside. The Wildcats shot 40 percent (14-of-35) in the half and were 3-for-13 from distance.
