Men's Soccer Earns Result at Evansville in Regular Season Finale

Bruins Get Goals from Cox and Steely

EVANSVILLE, Ind.. – Belmont University men's soccer (5-8-4, 1-5-2 MVC) earned a hard-fought 2-2 draw at Evansville (8-6-3, 4-3-1 MVC) Wednesday night from McCutchan Stadium.

In a match marked by seven yellow cards and huge momentum swings, the Bruins overcame adversity in each half to garner a road result.

The hosts had much of the early attack, as an acrobatic save from Grant Calvert on a blast from Audun Engen Vik kept things scoreless.

But moments later following a Purple Aces corner kick, Nacho Diaz Barragan gave the home side an early 1-0 advantage.

Belmont got on the front foot midway through the half, finding the equalizer in the 27th minute. Jimiyu Mark made a strong run down the right side before finding Case Cox back post for a well-timed header goal.

Calvert made another timely save in the 41st minute to ensure a 1-1 halftime score.

Cox and Riley Clothier would have scoring opportunities early in the second half before Evansville regained the lead.

Diaz Barragan was again the beneficiary in the 56th minute.

But as they have done throughout the season – including in their resounding shutout victory over Lipscomb Oct. 29 – the Bruins showed resolve and purpose.

In the 61st minute, expert service from Brad Dildy on a restart into the heart of the box connected with Dylan Steely to square the match once more.

Mark would follow with a pair of scoring opportunities before Belmont tacked on two final corner kick chances in the waning moments.

All told, Belmont outshot Evansville, 8-5, in the second half, also posting four of the six corner kick opportunities after halftime.

The Bruins earned results in three of their final four matches.
