Men's' Tennis Defeats Chattanooga 4-3 for First Win of the Season

The win is the first for Jeff Cero as Belmont's head coach.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Belmont men's tennis team picked up its first win of the season as they defeated Chattanooga 4-3 in a match played indoors Sunday in Chattanooga.

The Mocs picked up the first point of the match as they posted wins at number one and three doubles.  The lone Belmont victory came at number two as Ian Cruz and Tomas Luis beat Cortland Grove and Jordan McClure 6-2.

The Bruins stormed back in singles, earning wins at the top four positions to earn the 4-3 match win over the homestanding Mocs.  At one, Alfred Wallin outlasted Gabriel Castillo in three sets: 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.  Luis won at number two over Ryan Mudre in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. 

Cruz posted a win at three as he defeated Grove 7-5, 6-2.  Niklas Van Hellens earned his first singles win of the season as he won at number four over Walker Valentine in three sets: 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Sunday's win marked the first victory for Jeff Cero as Belmont's new head coach. 

The men's tennis team (1-3) is back in action next Saturday as they play at Louisville starting at 4:00pm CT.
