BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Belmont women's tennis team fell to Southern Miss 4-3 in a neutral site match held Sunday morning in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
The Bruins picked up the first point of the match as they won two of three doubles matches. At position one, sophomore
Mariia Hlahola and junior
Anastasiya Zholdakova outlasted Alyssa Richter and Hannah Chambers 6-4. Then at two, juniors
Abi Solomon and
Viktoria Kliimand blanked Suhana Das and Zenn Lim 6-0. The match at number three was unfinished since the doubles point was clinched.
In singles, Belmont won the at the top two positions, but the Golden Eagles swept the bottom four to clinch the 4-3 victory. BU's Hlahola won at number one over Richter by retirement 5-7, 6-2, 2-0. While at two, freshman
Vesa Gjinaj swept Lim 6-3, 6-2. Gijnaj has the team lead in singles wins with 12, while Hlahola is one win back with 11.
The women's tennis team is back in action next Saturday as they host Gonzaga at 3:00pm indoors at the Ensworth Tennis Center.
