NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - The Belmont University baseball team (1-0) began their 2024 campaign at home Friday afternoon against Eastern Michigan (0-1). This was the first time the teams squared off since March 6, 2010. Despite the overcast conditions and being outhit 7-5, Belmont's
Landon Godsey took full advantage of the strong winds, as the junior transfer launched two home runs in his first game with the team. Sophomore
Will Pryor and freshman
Hank Liss took care of business on the mound, as the Bruins won, 4-3.
Bruin Bullets
- Will Pryor (1-0) picked up his first win of the season and picked up a quality start. The sophomore tossed six innings, allowed two runs, and struck out six Eagles.
- Landon Godsey launched two solo home runs and was the lone Bruin to record multiple hits. Godsey is the first Bruin to have a multi-home run game since Mason Landers did last season against Murray State on April 29.
- Hank Liss went three innings, allowed one run, struck out two, and picked up the save.
Pryor got off to a hot start in the 1
st inning with a pair of strikeouts. In the bottom half,
Landon Godsey sent the 3-2 pitch over the left field fence, as the first Bruins' first hit of the season put them on the scoreboard, 1-0.
Eastern Michigan got on the board in the top of the third. After a leadoff double from Lucas Johnson, the Eagles' Glen Miller hit a sacrifice fly to center field to tie the game, 1-1.
The Eagles had a chance to take the lead in the fifth inning. Lucas Johnson hit an infield single, and advanced to second on a throwing error with two outs. Pryor walked Blake McRae, but got the next hitting to lineout to leave an Eagle stranded.
Pete Daniel led off the bottom half by reaching base on an error.
Blake Barton and
Max Jones both singled to load the bases. With one out,
Sam Kirkpatrick hit a ball in the six-hole that shortstop Cooper Vance threw to second base but failed to get an out. Two batters later, Barton scored on a passed ball, to make it 3-1 Bruins.
Eastern Michigan responded in the sixth inning with an RBI double from Cooper Vance.
Belmont called upon freshman
Hank Liss from the bullpen in the seventh inning. Liss made quick work of the first batter he faced and recorded his first collegiate strikeout. He stranded one runner on base to end the top-half of the inning.
Godsey provided an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth with his second solo home run of the game to left field.
The Eagle scratched across one more run in the top of the ninth. A pinch-hit RBI single from Giano Zuccaro brought the Eagles back within one. Liss got Miller to fly out to center, as the freshman completed the three-inning save. Belmont won the game, 4-3

Belmont returns to action against Eastern Michigan tomorrow, February 17, for a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
