ATLANTA, Ga. – The Belmont University Softball Program split the second day of the Panther Invitational at Georgia State. The Bruins opened the day with a loss to South Dakota (4-5) but bounced back with a win over host GSU (2-8).
Game 1 vs South Dakota (2-5)
The Bruins and Coyotes saw two scoreless innings before South Dakota recorded the first run in the top of the third. In her first at bat for the day,
Indy Cockrill hit a home run to even the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the third.
The teams remained tied heading into the fifth. The Coyotes eventually broke things open and scored three runs in the top of the fifth. The Bruins also added a run in the fifth to cut the Coyotes' lead to 2-4.
After the fifth inning, Belmont was unable to bring in a run resulting in a 2-5 loss.
Game 2 vs Georgia State (8-3)
The Bruin bats got hot right at first pitch. In just the second at bat of the game,
Nicole Hughes hit a home run to put Belmont on the board. The Bruins continued their strong start with
Brenna Blume recording a 3 RBI home run. Blume's hit gave Belmont a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first.
With three quick outs, the Bruins headed into the second leading by four. Hughes continued her hot start with an RBI double to extend Belmont's lead to 5-0.
Kylie Cunningham recorded a sac fly to bring I. Cockrill across home plate in the top of the third. The Bruins held a commanding 6-0 lead until the Panthers got their offense rolling in the bottom of the third. GSU added three runs to cut Belmont's lead to 6-3 headed into the fourth.
Belmont quickly responded in the top of the fifth with another home run for I. Cockrill. I. Cockrill's home run marked her second on the day.
The Bruins continued to lead 7-3 until the top of the sixth where
Emily Cockrill recorded an RBI single to add another run for Belmont.
Belmont remained on top 8-3 throughout the rest of the game securing their second win over GSU in the Panther Invitational.
