NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont (3-1) and Eastern Michigan (1-3) concluded their four-game series on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader. Opening Weekend came to an end with the Bruins and Eagles splitting the day, as Belmont won the final game, 9-7.
Game One: Eastern Michigan – 16 Belmont – 6
Bruin Bullets
Eastern Michigan wasted no time scoring. The Eagles went up 8-0 after two innings.
Freshman
Ty Allen recorded his first collegiate hit with two outs, as he doubled to left field.
Wyatt Fooks drove Allen in on single to center field the next at-bat.
Both teams scored a run in the third inning. Belmont's
Mason Landers hit a solo shot with one out, as Belmont trailed 9-2.
Eastern Michigan scored seven more runs in the game. Belmont showed their fight in the seventh inning, as the Bruins scored four runs all with two outs.
Cade Rogers drove in
Jeff Clarke and Fooks,
Max Jones hit an RBI double, and
Jack Rando recorded an RBI single.
Belmont dropped the first game, 16-6.
Game Two: Eastern Michigan 7 - Belmont – 0
Bruin Bullets
- Pete Daniel went 1-for-3, with two RBIs, and hit his first collegiate home run
- Daniel, along with Landers, Max Jones, and Blake Barton all recorded two home runs
- Cade Granzow started for the Bruins with 3.1 innings pitched, allowing three hits,
- Bill Duby recorded the save in his first appearance as a Bruin.
Belmont got on the board in the first inning. With two outs and the bases loaded,
Max Jones singled to bring in two runs.
The Bruins added two more runs in the second inning. Freshman
Pete Daniel connected on a 1-0 hanging baseball that Daniel crushed it over the left field fence.
Eastern Michigan chipped away at their four-run deficit in the fourth.
Dominic Baratta replaced Granzow after one out. Baratta did his best to prevent the Eagles from scoring, but two singles and a sacrifice fly tied the game at 4-4 after the top of the fourth.
Belmont responded in the home half.
Brodey Heaton stepped into the box with the bases loaded and no outs. A five-pitch walk brought home the go-ahead run. Landers hit a ground ball up the middle, which scored
Landon Godsey. Belmont regained the lead, 6-4.
The Eagles came alive in the sixth after a Belmont pitching change. Eastern Michigan strung together four straight hits, including a two-run home run from Darren Kraft.
Bill Duby came in and got three ground ball outs, but the go-ahead run scored with one out.
Belmont's sixth inning was the complete offensive performance they were missing in the series. With runners on first and second and one out. Landers singled through the left side, and drove
Max Blessinger. He later stole second with two outs, which proved to be pivotal with Heaton standing at third.
Blake Barton went opposite field and drove in both runners, as the Bruins went up 9-7.
Duby took the mound in the seventh inning with some spunk and confidence, as the graduate transfer pitched a 1-2-3 inning. He struck out the first two Eagles he faced, and then got Blake McRae to fly out to right field.
Duby earned the win, as Belmont won the game 9-7. The Bruins won the weekend series 3-1.
