NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Despite winning the top three singles matches, the Belmont University men's tennis team was narrowly defeated 4-3 by Samford University Friday afternoon at the Beaman Family Tennis Complex. Playing their first match of the season outdoors in the Music City, the Bruins (1-5) were strong at the top of the singles lineup but weren't able to find a fourth singles win after dropping the pivotal doubles point.
Â
Earning their first road victory of the year, the Bulldogs (6-4) won No. 1 doubles 6-1 before clinching the doubles point with a 6-3 triumph at the third position. The tandem of senior
Alfred Wallin and junior
Ruben Busch were trailing Samford's Santiago Arredondo and J.B. Pickard 4-3 at No. 2 doubles when the doubles point was clinched.
Â
Junior
Ian Cruz cruised to a straight-set 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles to even the match at a point apiece, before the Bulldogs' Sebastion Harrison earned a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 6 singles.
Â
Samford then went up 3-1 when the Bulldogs' Pickard tallied a 6-4, 6-4 triumph at the fifth singles spot. Senior
Tomas Luis got Belmont back in the match at the No. 2 spot where he came back to top Samford's Sandeep Mohandoss. After dropping the opening set 6-3, Luis stormed back and won sets two and three, 6-1, 6-3.
Â
Needing just one more singles win to seal the match, the Bulldogs picked up a 7-5, 6-4 victory from Maksim Bogdanovich at No. 4 singles.
Â
Wallin outlasted Samford's Maxwell Giddens in three sets on court one. Like Luis, Wallin recovered from a 6-3 first set loss by winning the second and third sets, 6-4, 6-1.
