Bruins Come Up Short in 14-Inning Battle with Trojans

Heaton Sends Game into Extra Innings with Ninth-Inning Home Run

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont (6-5) and Little Rock (6-4) settled the second game of the series in extra innings once again. After the 10-inning game on Friday, the teams battled in the second-longest game in Division I Baseball this season, with 14 innings of play. Belmont's Brodey Heaton tied the game in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Little Rock's three spot in the fourteenth ended the game lasting almost four hours. Belmont fell to the Trojans once again in extra innings, 5-3.

Bruin Bullets
  • Brodey Heaton went 2-for-6, with the game-tying home run in the ninth inning. The long ball was Heaton's third this season. Heaton extends his hit streak to 10 games.
  • Jake Timbes went a career-high 6.2 innings with four strikeouts.
  • Blake Ciuffetelli and Jordan Zuger each allowed no runs in their relief outings.
  • Hank Liss tossed a season-high 3.1 innings.
  • Max Jones delivered an RBI single in the third inning.

Belmont's Jake Timbes was effective through the first three innings of his outing. The sophomore had three 1-2-3 innings and two strikeouts to start his afternoon.

Belmont scored the first run of the game in the third inning. Michael Lareau walked with one out and later stole second. Max Jones' single brought Lareau home, as the Bruins led for the only time in the game, 1-0.

Little Rock's fifth inning was the only scoring action the Trojans say, until extra innings. Following a leadoff Skyler Trevino single, Noah Brewer hit his first home run of the season. Little Rock scored again four batters later, as Alex Seguine drove in his first of two RBIs in the game. The Trojans led 3-1 going into the bottom of the fourth.

Timbes prevented more scoring from the Trojans in the sixth. Ty Rhoades walked with one out, and advanced to third base on a Brewer single to left field. Timbes struck out Christian Bernabe to end the top half of the inning.

Belmont responded in the sixth inning. A two-out walk from Landon Godsey put a runner aboard for Mason Landers. The senior third baseman drove the 1-0 pitch to right center field, as Godsey sped around the bases, and made it a 3-2 Bruin deficit.

Blake Ciuffetelli relieved Timbes in the top of the seventh, with two outs and runners aboard. Ciuffetelli got Luke Pectol to ground out to him, for the final out. Timbes ended the game with a career-high 6.2 innings, allowed three runs on six hits, and struck out four Trojans.

Belmont's offense struggled to get runners on base. Ciuffetelli did his part, with a 1-2-3 eighth inning, with a strikeout. The lefty ended the game with a strikeout in 1.1 innings pitched, without allowing a hit or free pass.

Jordan Zuger came into the game for Belmont in the ninth. He started his outing with a strikeout and kept the Trojans from adding any insurance runs before the Bruins' last at-bats.

Little Rock brought Jacob Weatherley in to close the game, in the ninth inning. The right-hander picked up the win in Friday night's game, but blew the save in his outing today. Brodey Heaton hit a solo home run to right field with one out, and sent the game into extra innings, 3-3.

Freshman Hank Liss was called upon again for the fourth time this season. After two ground outs to start the tenth inning, Tyler Williams singled to right field. Landon Godsey threw out Williams attempting to steal second, which ended the tenth inning for Little Rock.

Belmont had a chance to win the game in the tenth inning. A pair of one-out walks from Michael Lareau and Pete Daniel set the Bruins up nicely, however, Weatherly worked out of the jam.

Liss tossed two more 1-2-3 innings, and bailed his defense out in the twelfth on an inning-ending ground ball turned double play. He started to fade in the thirteenth. A one-out walk and single put a runner in scoring position for Little Rock, for the first time since the sixth inning. The Bruins called upon Dominic Baratta to stop the bleeding. Baratta shut down the Trojans' scoring opportunity, with a pair of ground balls.

The 3-3 broke in the fourteenth inning. Bernabe singled with one out. An error on a ground ball to Max Jones led to another runner in scoring position for Little Rock. Jake Wright and Seguine both drove in runs on RBI singles, as Little Rock took a 5-3, into the bottom of the fourteenth.

Hunter Royal tossed a 1-2-3 bottom half, with a pair of strikeouts to seal the victory for Little Rock, 5-3.

Belmont and Little Rock wrap up their weekend series Sunday afternoon at E.S. Rose Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
