NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont (12-11, 1-1) and UIC (14-7, 1-1) continued their weekend series Saturday afternoon at E.S. Rose Park. After suffering a late-inning loss Friday, the Bruins bounced back today with a 4-3 win over the Flames.
Bruin Bullets
- The 4-3 is the first win in program history over UIC.
- Dominic Baratta went six innings in his start and improved to 2-1 on the season. Baratta allowed four hits, three runs, and struck out three batters.
- Sam Slaughter went 3-for-4 with a run. Slaughter's performance tied a career-high previously set on March 19th vs. #3 Vanderbilt
- Hank Liss earned the save in his three-scoreless innings out of the bullpen. He struck out four Flames.
- Mason Landers, Brodey Heaton, Jack Rando, and Pete Daniel recorded RBIs.
- Heaton is one hit shy of becoming 10th all-time in career hits. His current career total is 225 hits.
- Belmont scored four unanswered runs in the game.
- Baratta and Liss allowed no runs and only four hits, in the final seven innings of the game.
UIC scored all three of their runs in the second inning. Pambos Nicoloudes brought in two runs on a triple to center field. James Harris hit a sacrifice fly to right field that brought Nicoloudes home. The Flames led 3-0 after the second.
The Flames threatened to score again in the fourth. A pair of two-out singles put runners on the corners for UIC.
Dominic Baratta got Vidal Colon to ground into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
Belmont got on the board in the home half.
Mason Landers led off with a double down the left-field line.
Jack Rando drove Landers in on a single to center field. Following a
Max Jones single, a ground ball from
Pete Daniel to the pitcher scored Rando from third. Belmont scored two runs on three hits in the inning.
The Bruins scored two more runs in the fifth.
Max Blessinger and
Sam Slaughter singled to start the inning.
Landon Godsey laid down a sacrifice bunt, which moved both runners into scoring position. Landers hit a sacrifice fly to left field the next at-bat, which tied the game at 3-3.
Brodey Heaton drove a double to right-center field, which gave Belmont their first lead of the game at 4-3.
Baratta was efficient in his third start of the season. The southpaw tied a season-high six innings of work, with three strikeouts. He threw two 1-2-3 innings on the day, and issued one free pass in the final three innings of his outing.
Hank Liss prevented the Flames from retaking the lead in the seventh. After he struck out the first batter he faced, Liss gave up a single to Colon and walked Zane Zielinski. Liss struck out the next two batters, as the Flames came up empty-handed in the inning.
The Bruins took care of business Saturday afternoon and won the game, 4-3.
