Softball Earns Seventh Straight Win

Bruins Top Sycamores 6-0 in Game Two of Series

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Belmont University Softball Program (21-9, 7-2 MVC) took on Indiana State (13-17, 2-5 MVC) in game two of the weekend series on Saturday. The Bruins took an impressive 6-0 game over the Sycamores to clinch a series win while extending their win streak to seven.

How it Happened
Belmont set the tone from the first pitch. With the first at bat of the game, Emma Barnes doubled to right field. Nicole Hughes followed with a single to send Barnes to third. The shortstop would go on to steal second leaving Bruins in scoring position on second and third. Grace Gressly stepped up to bat and drove in an RBI sacrifice fly to put Belmont on the board early. Belmont took a 1-0 lead at the end of the first.

Both teams saw a three up, three down second inning.

After two walks, Emily Cockrill hit a single to load the bases for Belmont in the top of the third. Brenna Blume entered the batter's box and was walked resulting in a run for the Bruins. The Bruin batters continued to see walks and would earn another run off a walk late in the third. Belmont recorded three quick outs in the bottom of the third to finish the inning up 3-0.

Hughes added another single for the Bruins in the top of the fourth, but the team was unable to bring her home. The Bruins continued a strong defensive showing with three straight outs in the bottom of the fourth to maintain a 3-0 lead.

Belmont and Indiana State recorded one hit each in the fifth, but were unable to bring any runs in. The score stayed at 3-0 heading into the sixth.

Similar to the previous inning, the Bruins and Sycamores struggled to bring in a run in the sixth leaving the score at 3-0.

The Bruins came out swinging in the final inning. Baie Ensio got things started with a single. Abi Ledbetter later added an RBI single up the middle to bring in a run for the Bruins. With a passed ball, Belmont would score again to extend their lead to five. Hughes went on to record an RBI sacrifice fly to drive in the final run for the Bruins.

Belmont went on to finish the game on top 6-0. Emma Summers collected the win in the circle for the Bruins. The pitcher threw a shutout while tallying seven strikeouts.
