WINTER PARK, Fla. – Beginning a three-match road swing in the Sunshine State for spring break, the Belmont University men's tennis team defeated NCAA Division II nationally-ranked Ferris State Monday in a neutral-site match at the Winter Park Tennis Center in Winter Park, Florida. The Bruins (2-6) won five of the six singles matches against the Division II 20th-ranked Bulldogs (5-2) for their second victory of the young season.

Four of Belmont's five singles wins came in straight sets.

Tomas Luis and junior
Ian Cruz claimed the Bruins' lone doubles win of the day as the pair ousted Ferris State's Jan Koupil and Alessandro Santangelo at the No. 2 spot.

Singles was a completely different story with Belmont earning dominant wins throughout its lineup. Cruz dropped only one game at No. 3 singles against the Bulldogs' Erik Kovacs (6-0, 6-1), while senior
Alfred Wallin topped Ferris State's 44th-ranked Benjamin Lortie 6-3, 6-0 at the top spot.

Luis handled the Bulldogs' Esunge Ndumbe 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and senior
Niklas von Hellens got past Ferris State's Yannic Mader 6-4, 6-4 at the fourth singles position.

Junior
Gabriel Sardo won the only singles match that went to three sets, outlasting the Bulldogs' Santangelo 10-4 in a deciding third-set super tiebreaker. He also won the opening set in a tiebreaker (7-4) before falling 6-4 in the second set.

The Bruins travel to Jacksonville, Florida, Wednesday for a 1 p.m. match at the University of North Florida. On Thursday, Belmont wraps up its stay in Florida with a 1 p.m. match at Stetson University in DeLand.
