Baseball Rolls Past Valparaiso

Belmont’s Five-Run Fifth Inning and Cade Granzow’s Relief Outing Carry Bruins to 9-2 Win

VALPARAISO, Ind. - - Belmont (18-16, 6-4 MVC) traveled to Valparaiso (10-21, 2-8 MVC) to kick off their weekend series. The Bruins exploded in the fifth inning and rode Cade Granzow for five innings to a 9-2 victory.

  • Sam Slaughter went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run and two runs.
  • Mason Landers went 3-for-5 and had an RBI. He extends his hit streak to 17 games.
  • Brodey Heaton went 3-for-5 with a grand slam and two runs.
  • Cade Granzow tossed five innings out of the bullpen and picked up the win. He allowed two hits, one run, and struck out six batters.
  • Belmont held Valparaiso hitless through 6.1 innings. The Beacons stranded 11 runners on base.
Valparaiso scored the first run of the game in the first inning. Belmont starter Will Pryor allowed three walks and hit a batter during the inning. The Beacons scored one run on now hits and left the bases loaded.
 
The Bruins took the lead in the third inning. Landon Godsey led off with a double down the third base line. Sam Slaughter smacked a two-run home run to right field. Slaughter's fifth home run of the season gave Belmont a 2-1 lead.
 
 Belmont doubled their run total in the fourth. The Bruins had runners on second and third with one out. Brodey Heaton scored on a passed ball. Jeff Clarke scored later on a wild pitch. Belmont led 4-1 after the fourth.
 
 The Bruins broke the game open in the fifth. Slaughter singled to lead off the inning. Jack Rando bunted his way onto first base. Mason Landers singled to load the bases for Heaton. Heaton smacked a first-pitch grand slam to center field. The Bruins led 9-1 after the fifth inning.
 
 Valparaiso scored their second run of the game in the seventh inning. Carson Husmann hit a solo home run with one out to right field. It was the Beacon's first hit of the game. The score remained the same until the final out. Belmont won the game, 9-2.
