CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Belmont University Softball Program (27-13, 13-6 MVC) fell to Southern Illinois (31-8, 15-3 MVC) in game one of the weekend series.
How it Happened
The Belmont bats got off to a slow start. Southern Illinois brought in an early run to take a 0-1 lead at the end of the first.
Abi Ledbetter led off the second inning for the Bruins with a single to second. Despite the slight movement, Belmont was unable to bring in a run. SIU went on to add another run in the bottom of the second making the score 0-2.
Ella Bertucci and
Emma Barnes each added a single for Belmont in the top of the third. The Bruins were unable to bring them home leaving the inning still down two.
The Bruins were still unable to put a run on the board in the fourth and fifth inning. In the bottom of the fifth, the Salukis threatened with two on base and a power hit from Addi Baker. Baker's hit looked to be out of the park until
Baie Ensio made an impressive play to rob the batter of a three-run home run. The game remained at 0-2 heading into the sixth.
Belmont couldn't record a run through the sixth or seventh resulting in a 0-2 loss.
