CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Belmont University Softball Program (27-14, 13-7 MVC) battled before falling to Southern Illinois (32-8, 16-3 MVC) in a close game two of the weekend series.
How it Happened
Belmont came out swinging from the first pitch.
Emma Barnes led off the game with a single up the middle.
Brenna Blume later drove in a two-run home run to give the Bruins an early 2-0 lead. In her first inning of the weekend,
Maya Johnson threw three-straight strikeouts to keep Belmont in the lead heading into the second.
The Bruins' bats continued to stay hot in the second inning.
Emily Cockrill got the inning started with a single to left. Freshman
Lauren Luciani recorded an RBI single to extend Belmont's lead to 3-0 after the second.
Johnson pitched another impressive inning with three consecutive strikeouts in the third.
The Bruins were able to hold the Salukis scoreless until the bottom of the fourth where Jackie Lis recorded a home run cutting Belmont's lead to 3-1.
Both teams saw a three up, three down inning in the fifth.
Blume walked in the top of the sixth before
Savannah Halterman pinch ran for the catcher. Halterman went on to steal second base. Despite the movement on the bases, the Bruins were unable to bring in another run. SIU tallied four hits in the bottom of the sixth bringing in three runs to take a late lead.
The Bruins were unable to record a hit or run in the seventh resulting in a 3-4 loss.
