CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Belmont University Softball Program (27-15, 13-8 MVC) fell to Southern Illinois (33-8, 17-3 MVC) in series finale on Sunday.
How it Happened
Belmont and Southern Illinois both saw a three up, three down first inning to start the game.
The Bruins struggled to get their bats going in the second and returned to defense after three quick outs. The Salukis added the first hit of the day in the bottom of the second, but the Belmont defense stepped up to prevent a run for SIU.
SIU threatened with runners on second and third in the bottom of the third. The Belmont defense remained calm and collected two straight outs to leave the Salukis on base and keep the score at 0-0 heading into the fourth.
Belmont's offense was unable to record a hit or run in the fourth. The Salukis broke things open in the bottom of the inning and added three runs on the board. The Bruins quickly fell behind 0-3 at the end of the fourth.
The Bruins saw some slight movement on the bases in the fifth. With a Saluki error,
Emily Cockrill was the first for Belmont to touch the bases. Belmont couldn't bring her home leaving the Bruins still scoreless. SIU added another run in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead at 0-4 heading into the sixth.
Both teams saw three-straight outs in the sixth.
In an attempt to come back,
Grace Gressly recorded the lone hit for the Bruins in the top of the seventh. Despite the work from Gressly, Belmont couldn't score resulting in a 0-4 loss.
