Baseball Walks-Off Missouri State

Sam Slaughter Delivers Game-Winning RBI-Single in 10th Inning

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont (23-26, 10-12 MVC) and (19-30, 8-14 MVC) began their weekend series at E.S. Rose Park on Friday night. The Bruins won a thrilling extra-inning game on Sam Slaughter's RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning 11-10 over the Bears.

  • Landon Godsey's three hits tied a season high. Godsey hit his sixth home run of the season in the second inning and drove in two runs.
  • Brodey Heaton hit his 14th home run of the season in the third inning. Heaton's 40th career home run ties Nate Woods ('08-'11) for second all-time.
  • Sam Slaughter went 2-for-6 with 2 RBIs and delivered the walk-off RBI single in the 10th inning.
  • Jack Rando and Blake Barton each had two hits.
  • Michael Lareau led off the tenth inning with a single and stole second base.
  • Mason Landers scored a game-high three runs and hit an RBI double.
  • Max Blessinger, Landers, and Rando recorded stolen bases. Belmont's four stolen bases tied a season-high and were the most in a game since March 30th against Murray State.
  • Bill Duby picked up his second win of the season in relief.
Missouri State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Nick Rodriguez's infield single drove in the first run of the game. Dylan Leach hit a sacrifice fly to center field. Zach Stewart hit an RBI single to left field.
 
Belmont's first runs of the game came during the bottom of the second. Blake Barton drew a one-out walk. Landon Godsey drilled the 2-2 pitch over the left field fence. His sixth home run of the season cut Missouri State's lead to 3-2.
 
The Bears responded with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Stewart hit another RBI single. Logan Chambers followed with an RBI single of his own. Missouri State restored their three-run lead, 5-2.
 
Belmont tied the game in the home half. The Bruins rattled off three runs on four hits with two outs. Jack Rando laid down a bunt single to the left side. Mason Landers hit an RBI double to left-center field. Brodey Heaton tied the game at 5-5 on a two-run shot to left field.
 
Missouri State regained the lead in the fourth on a two-out RBI double from Rodriguez. The Bruins caught Rodriguez attempting to leg out a triple. The Bears took a 6-5 lead.
 
The Bruins knotted the game up at 6-6 in the bottom half. Max Blessinger reached on a two-out fielder's choice and stole second. Pete Daniel singled to left field. Sam Slaughter drove in his first runs of the game on a single through the right side.
 
The Bears had a prime opportunity to retake the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Cade Granzow struck out Tyler Epstein to leave the bases loaded and end the inning.
 
 Belmont took the lead for the first time in the fifth inning. Rando and Landers drew walks and both stole a base. Heaton chopped high ground ball in the infield that brought in Rando. Landers scored on a wild pitch in the next at-bat. Barton and Godsey singled. Both runners moved up on a balk. Max Jones hit a ground ball to third baseman Izzy Lopez but his throw home was off target and scored Barton. Belmont led 9-6.
 Missouri State answered with a run in the top of the sixth. Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Cody Kelly. Belmont came up empty-handed in the bottom half but led 9-7.
 
The Bears stormed back in the top of the ninth to retake the lead. Rodriguez led off the inning with a double. Caden Bogenpohl drew a walk. Leach singled to right field. Chambers hit a one-out RBI double to left-center field. With runners on first and third, Lopez hit a ground ball to Landers at third that got caught in his glove. Stewart scored on the play and put Missouri State ahead 10-9.
 
The Bruins rallied in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game. Landers drew a lead-off walk. Heaton struck out and Barton flew out in the next two at-bats. Landers advanced on a wild pitch to second base. Down to their last strike, Godsey hit a ground ball to Rodriguez who misplayed it and threw it out of play. Landers scored on the two-error play and sent the game to extra innings tied at 10-10.
 
 Bill Duby came in from the bullpen in the 10th inning. He made light work of the Bears and ended his 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout.
 
 Michael Lareau started the home half with a single to right field. He stole second base during Daniel's at-bat to move into scoring position. Daniel hit a fly ball to Stewart in right field that he dropped. The Bruins set the table for Slaughter with runners on first and third. Slaughter swung at the first pitch and drove the ball down the right-field line for a walk-off RBI single. Belmont won the series opener 11-10.
 
 Belmont and Missouri State return to action tomorrow at E.S. Rose Park with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. Fans can stream the game on ESPN+, listen live on iHeartRadio or follow along with live stats.
