Baseball Falls to #1 Tennessee

Bruins Drop Midweek Contest to Top-Ranked Volunteers

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont (24-28) traveled to No. 1 Tennessee (43-10) for the final midweek contest of the regular season. The Vols took care of business at Rocky Top and downed the Bruins 10-0 in seven innings.

  • Sam Slaughter went 2-for-3 and extended his on-base streak to 21 games and hit streak to seven games. He also stole two bases.
  • Mason Landers recorded the first hit of the ballgame in the first inning.
  • Pete Daniel doubled.
  • Ty Allen has a team-high two strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work.
 
Mason Landers recorded Belmont's first hit of the ballgame with two outs in the first inning.
 
Tennessee jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in their first at-bats. The Vols scored their five runs on three hits and a pair of errors.
 
Sam Slaughter hit a one-out single to center field in the third inning. He stole both second and third base with two outs. Mason Landers grounded out to end the inning.
 
The Vols scored a pair of runs in the third inning following a Belmont pitching change. Tennessee had the bases loaded with no outs after a leadoff double and a pair of walks issued by Hank Liss. Tennessee led 7-0.
 
Slaughter singled again in the top of the fifth inning with two outs but was left stranded.
 
Tennessee scored three runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. Colby Backus and Christian Moore hit back-to-back solo home runs to start the inning. Reese Chapman hit a pinch-hit solo home run with two outs to put the Vols up 10-0.
 
Pete Daniel doubled with one out in the seventh inning. The Bruins went quietly after their fourth hit of the ballgame and fell to the top-ranked Volunteers 10-0.
 
Belmont wraps up the regular season with a three-game series at Illinois State starting Thursday, May 16. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 5 p.m. from Duffy Bass Field.
