Bruins Secure First Win of Season, Defeat Southern Indiana 3-0 in Home Opener

Men’s Soccer Scores Trio of Second-Half Goals; Senior Defender Alex Clayton Tallies Four Points

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After a scoreless road draw to begin its 2024 campaign, the Belmont University men's soccer team put three in the back of the net Sunday evening at E.S. Rose Park for a 3-0 victory over visiting Southern Indiana. The Bruins (1-0-1) scored all three goals in the second half of the home opener and earned their second consecutive shutout to begin the season.

Senior defender Alex Clayton, who opened the scoring in the 51st minute, recorded four points as he assisted on both of Belmont's other two goals.

Controlling the match in all facets of the game, the Bruins did not allow a single shot on target by the visiting Screaming Eagles (0-2-0) and gave up only two shots across the 90 minutes. All three of Belmont's shots on goal found the space between the pipes and the Bruins totaled 15 shots and six corner kicks. Belmont surrendered only one corner.

Despite a promising look for graduate forward Esteban Leiva in the 24th minute that barely missed left of goal, the two teams entered halftime scoreless.

In the 51st minute, redshirt junior forward Jimiyu Mark passed the ball ahead to Clayton who dribbled his way into the box and launched the Bruins' first score of the season off his right foot. Moments later, Clayton found junior forward Brock Kiper on a well-placed cross in the 54th minute. Kiper headed it in from just outside the six-yard box after senior midfielder Rubyn Singh Gill connected with Clayton on the far-right side from the top of the penalty area. With about 17 minutes to go, Clayton dropped in his second assist of the evening. Making his way from the right side of the box, senior captain midfielder AJ Chastonay put Belmont up 3-0 with a left-footed strike. There were no cautions in the match.   Of Note
