Women’s Soccer Suffers Road Loss to Marshall

Late Goal Ends in Heartbreaking Defeat

Huntington, W. Va. - - Belmont University women's soccer (1-4) traveled to Marshall (1-2-1) Sunday afternoon for the first all-time meeting between the teams. The Bruins played a physical match and had multiple quality scoring chances in the second half, but the Herd scored the game-winning goal in the 87th minute to win, 1-0.

Both the Bruins and Herd matched each other's physicality. The teams drew 21 combined fouls, while Marshall was issued yellow cards and a red card to an assistant coach.

Goalkeeper Sydney Jones made four saves in the first half to keep the Herd off the scoresheet.

The Bruins dialed up the offensive pressure in the second half; Belmont outshot Marshall 5-3 in the final 45 minutes. Anna Samuel placed a shot on goal inside the 18-yard box in the 78th minute. The Bruins' two additional late scoring chances came from Anay Garcia and Abbigail Legg in the 81st and 83rd minute respectively.

Coach's Perspective

"Today's result was pretty gutting, to give up a set piece like that in the final three minutes," said Belmont Head Coach Kesley Cameron. "I thought we had a very slow start in the first half just reacting to things and had difficulty connecting. We made some tactical changes and came out much better in the second half. We created some really good chances, had a lot of momentum and were pushing for a goal. They scored against the run of play and it was tough to come back from that. While the result is disappointing, we need to continue to focus on learning from each game as we prepare for conference play. We will watch film and learn from this as we prepare for our next set of games."

Turning Point
  • Marshall's Angel Fowler broke the scoreless tie in the 87th minute. Madison Townes assisted on the goal.
What's Bruin
  • Belmont recorded their second-highest shot total in a match this season with nine shots. The Bruins placed five shots on goal for the third time this season.
  • Legg had a team-high two shots on goal.
  • Garcia recorded her first career shot and shot on goal.
  • Sami Bird, Eliza Paisley and Lillie Tabor played the full match on Belmont's back line.
  • Jones made four saves in the first half.
