Bruins Earn 1-1 Draw at Bellarmine Tuesday Evening

Senior Captain Midfielder AJ Chastonay Scores 18th Career Goal in 59th Minute

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Taking on Bellarmine University for the fifth-straight season, the Belmont University men's soccer team picked up its second road result of the young season Tuesday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky. The Bruins (2-2-2) secured a 1-1 draw against the host Knights (1-2-2) thanks to senior captain midfielder AJ Chastonay's 59th-minute goal.

Improving to 3-0-2 versus his father's program, Chastonay scored from well outside the 18-yard box early in the second half after breaking away from defenders on the left flank. Chastonay's goal came after Belmont nearly scored in the 20th minute on a header from junior defender Dylan Steely, which was barely saved and hit the left woodwork.

After giving the Bruins a 1-0 lead, Chastonay had a fantastic look in the 83rd minute when he just missed the far post after driving toward the six-yard box from the left side.

Moments after Chastonay's would-be second goal, Bellarmine found the back of the net in the 86th minute. The Knights' Rhys Davies completed a long throw into the box from the deep right touchline and found the shoulder blade of Bellarmine's Tate McCrery. The deflection off McCrery's back found its way between the pipes and evened the match at a goal apiece.

Belmont had no legitimate looks at goal in the final four minutes, however, the Knights grazed the crossbar in the closing 40 seconds. Graduate forward Case Cox's younger brother, Jeffrey, who is a defender for Bellarmine, headed the ball off the top of the frame on a long free kick.

The Bruins controlled the ball for much of the match and earned two corners in each half.

Both teams finished with five total shots, but Belmont conceded only the one shot on target. Of Note
  • Chastonay's second-half goal was his third against his father's team.
  • Chastonay has scored 18 goals in five seasons. He surpasses Niccolo Dagnoni (2018-21), Will Moorad (2008-11) and Jeremy Littlejohn (1995-98) for the third-most in program history.
  • The Bruins improve to 3-1-2 all-time versus the Knights.
  • Sophomore defender AJ Elliott made his first career start.
  • Junior midfielder Lashawn Brown made his Belmont debut.
