GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The Belmont University Volleyball Program (4-3, 0-0 MVC) opened the UND Classic against host North Dakota (4-3, 0-0 Summit) where the Bruins fell 0-3 to the Fighting Hawks.
How it Happened
Brooke Gilleland put down back-to-back kills to get the Bruins started with a 3-1 lead in the first. North Dakota went on a run to take the lead. A kill from
Emily Warmenhoven brought Belmont within two at 9-11. That would be the closest the Bruins could close the gap in the first as the Fighting Hawks went on to claim the set 19-25.
The Bruins got off to a hot start in the second. With a kill from
Alivia Keegan followed by an ace by Gilleland, Belmont took a 4-1 lead. UND then went on a 6-0 run to regain control. The Fighting Hawks continued to keep the lead and take set two 15-25.
Belmont was down 4-11 early in the third. The Bruins were able to put together a 4-0 run capped off by a kill from
Alexia Smollen to bring the team within six at 15-21. Despite the comeback attempt, the Bruins fell 18-25 in the third set resulting in a 0-3 loss.
