Carter Whitt Named MVC Newcomer of the Week

Point Guard Has Delivered All Season for the Bruins

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont University men's basketball guard Carter Whitt was named Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
 
Whitt averaged 18.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 6.0 assists per game as Belmont defeated Southern Illinois at home and Indiana State on the road this week.
 
Whitt scored a career-high 25 points at Indiana State and either scored or assisted on 10 straight points in the final 4:09 as Belmont won its third straight game.
 
The Raleigh, North Carolina native had 12 points and six assists vs. Southern Illinois, including a trailer pitch pass which gave Belmont the lead with 20 seconds left and the game-clinching free throws with eight seconds left.
 
Whitt ranks among MVC leaders in scoring and assists.
 
The 6-3 guard joins Jonathan Pierre and Sam Orme as Bruins to earn conference weekly honors this season.
 
Belmont (12-5, 4-2 MVC) returns to game action Tuesday vs. Valparaiso. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. from the Curb Event Center.

Belmont University men's basketball has been a postseason fixture for the last two decades, including nine berths to the NCAA Tournament. The Bruins have won 20 conference championships since 2006 - third-most nationally over that span (behind Gonzaga and Kansas). Belmont has won 20 or more games in 14 consecutive seasons (alongside Gonzaga, Kansas, and Oregon) and 19 or more games in 19 consecutive seasons (alongside Gonzaga, Kansas, and San Diego State). Belmont is among select programs with two or more first-round selections in the NBA Draft over the last five years (Ben Sheppard, Dylan Windler). Belmont University men's basketball boasts an NCAA-leading 19 Academic All-America selections since 2001 and is the only NCAA Division I program to make the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) Honor Roll every year of its existence. Belmont is the only NCAA Division I institution in America whose men's and women's basketball programs have won 20 or more games in nine consecutive seasons.
