ST. LOUIS – Following a strong start to the season over the weekend, Belmont University women's tennis'
Anastasiya Zholdakova has been selected as Missouri Valley Conference Singles Player of the Week. Announced by the conference office Wednesday afternoon, Zholdakova picks up her second singles player of the week award of her career. She was also named MVC Singles Player of the Week on March 1, 2023, her sophomore year.
Â
The senior helped lead the Bruins to a 1-0 start with an impressive victory at the top singles spot this past Sunday versus crosstown foe Tennessee State. A native of Kyiv, Ukraine, Zholdakova gave Belmont its fifth point of the match by defeating the Tigers' Warona Mdlulwa in a third-set super tiebreaker. After winning a tightly-contested opening set (7-5) against the No. 1,284 ranked player in the world, Zholdakova dropped a 6-3 second set before prevailing 10-4 in the 10-point tiebreak.
Â
In doubles, Zholdakova teamed up with fellow senior
Aly Getty for a dominant 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot. The Bruins won the doubles point and took four of the six singles matches for a 5-2 season-opening victory.
Â
Belmont returns to match action next weekend, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 8-9 in Birmingham, Alabama, where the Bruins will take on Samford Saturday at 1 p.m. and UAB Sunday at 11 a.m.
