Jonathan Pierre Named MVC Newcomer of the Week

Forward Nearly Averaged a 20-Point Double-Double This Past Week

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont University men's basketball forward Jonathan Pierre was named Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Pierre nearly averaged a 20-point double-double this past week as Belmont defeated UIC and lost a two-possession game at Northern Iowa.

He averaged 20.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game.

The Hallandale, Florida native had 22 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals vs. UIC, including a basket with 15 seconds remaining which increased Belmont's lead to three points.

Pierre had 19 points and 11 rebounds at Northern Iowa. 

He ranks among MVC leaders in eight statistical categories, including first in defensive rebounding, seventh in assists and 14th in points per game. The 6-9 forward has five double-doubles to his credit.

This marks the second time Pierre has been named MVC Newcomer of the Week.

Belmont University men's basketball has been a postseason fixture for the last two decades, including nine berths to the NCAA Tournament. Belmont is among select programs with two or more first-round selections in the NBA Draft over the last five years (Ben Sheppard, Dylan Windler). Belmont University men's basketball boasts an NCAA-leading 19 Academic All-America selections since 2001 and is the only NCAA Division I program to make the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) Honor Roll every year of its existence. Belmont is the only NCAA Division I institution in America whose men's and women's basketball programs have won 20 or more games in nine consecutive seasons.
