Belmont Volleyball Defeats Southern Illinois at Home

Bruins improve to 12-3 overall, 3-1 in Missouri Valley play

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont University volleyball team (12-3, 3-1) returned home Saturday night and earned a hard-fought 3–1 victory over Southern Illinois inside the Curb Event Center. Behind smart attacks, resilient defense, and clutch plays in key moments, the Bruins claimed their third Missouri Valley Conference win of the season.

The match opened with steady play from both sides, but Southern Illinois came back late in the first set to steal a 25–22 win. Belmont responded with high-energy in set two. A 5–0 opening run that included two aces from Brooke Gilleland sparked early momentum, and the Bruins extended their lead behind a combination of Bella Mathis' slide attack and the defense of libero Lilly Lutz. With Erin McMullen and Emily Warmenhoven adding important kills at the net, Belmont pushed the advantage to as high as 11 points and closed out a convincing 25–16 win.

The third set turned into a grind, as the Salukis jumped out in front by four before Belmont fought its way back. Connie Kofoed and Alivia Keegan kept pressure on with tough serving, while Lucy Kay, Brenna Kauffeld, and Warmenhoven chipped in kills to even the score. Lutz anchored the defense with key digs to extend rallies, and McMullen delivered a kill to tie the set at 24–24. A Warmenhoven ace gave Belmont set point, and after a key reverse call, the Bruins finished off a 27–25 thriller.

Set four featured another hard-fought battle as the Bruins and Salukis traded leads. Lutz's block coverage kept Belmont in system, while McMullen's kill and Warmenhoven's block pushed the Bruins ahead late. Gilleland provided the finishing touches with a huge swing and an ace, sealing the 25–22 set and the match.
