Bruins Earn 72-66 Road Victory in First-Ever Matchup with Dayton

Head Coach Bart Brooks Collects Career Victory No. 200

DAYTON, Ohio – Securing its first road victory of 2025-26, the Belmont University women's basketball team defeated the University of Dayton 72-66 in the two teams' first-ever meeting Sunday afternoon inside UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio. Gritty play late and key baskets from graduate guard Tuti Jones and junior guard Jailyn Banks pushed the Bruins (2-2) past the host Flyers (2-2) in a game Belmont never trailed.

The victory is ninth-year head coach Bart Brooks' 200th career win. Among the top coaches in the country with a 74.1 winning percentage, coach Brooks reaches the career milestone in only 270 games as a head coach.

The Bruins led from nearly the tip, scoring only five seconds into the contest and building a 12-point advantage early in the second half.

Committing a season-low 11 turnovers, Belmont turned Dayton over 24 times and overcame a minus-12 rebounding deficit (42-30).

Led by Banks' season-high 21 points, the Bruins got 14 points on a career-best 7-for-11 shooting performance from sophomore forward Hilary Fuller. Belmont scored 22 points off the bench led by senior guard Emily La Chapell's 12 points on 4-for-8 shooting, including 2-for-4 from beyond the arc.

Junior center KK Brodie went 4-for-5 from the field for a season-high eight points and Jones grabbed a season-best nine rebounds to go along with eight points.

The Bruins got off to a strong start as Fuller scored Belmont's first eight points. La Chapell put the Bruins in front 14-3 with just under three minutes to go in the opening quarter and Belmont led 16-7 following the first 10 minutes of the game. Hitting eight of their 16 first-quarter shots, the Bruins limited the Flyers to 3-for-11 (27.3 percent) shooting in the opening stanza. Fuller collected three of her career-high four steals in the first quarter and Dayton committed 10 turnovers across the inaugural 10 minutes of action.

Banks put Belmont back up by double digits with a jumper a little over two-and-a-half minutes into the second quarter before the Flyers whittled down the lead to four. Consecutive three-pointers from La Chapell and graduate guard Avery Strickland gave the Bruins a 29-19 lead with under three-and-a-half minutes to go in the half. Another Fuller basket made it 35-25 in the final minute of the half as a deep Banks three at the halftime buzzer came up just short.

Belmont shot 44.4 percent (16-of-36) across the first half but was just 3-for-16 (18.8 percent) from outside.

Fuller had 10 at the break and La Chapell seven.

Dayton was held to 31.8 percent (7-of-22) first-half shooting and coughed up 16 first-half turnovers.

Fuller gave the Bruins their largest lead of the afternoon at 37-25 within the first 10 seconds of the first half, before Banks kept Belmont up by double digits at 45-35 with an old-fashioned three-point play just past the midway point of the third quarter.

Following a Brodie jumper that kept the Bruins ahead by 10 at 47-37, the Flyers went on an 11-2 run to get within a point early in the fourth quarter. Belmont led by just three at 49-46 heading into the final period. Dayton outscored the Bruins 21-14 in the third quarter behind 7-for-14 shooting.

After the Flyers' Nicole Stephens made it a one-point game at 49-48, La Chapell immediately responded with a triple. A Banks three made it 55-50 Belmont with 7:49 remaining. Dayton got within a point once more at 55-54 after starting guard Olivia Leung knocked down a pair of free throws and connected on a jumper. From there, Jones and Banks' competitiveness shined.

Despite missing a jumper, Jones followed her shot, collected the rebound and put it in to make it 57-54 with five minutes to go. Moments later, Banks scored on a layup to give the Bruins a brief five-point cushion. She followed up with a steal and a score to make it 61-54 with four-and-a-half minutes left. With 4:03 remaining, Banks pulled up at the top of the key and drained her second three of the quarter to give Belmont an eight-point, 64-56 lead.

Banks' triple proved to be a real dagger as neither team made a field goal until the last 35 seconds.

The Flyers attempted to extend the game, but Banks went 6-for-6 at the free-throw line in the closing minute and La Chapell added a pair of made foul shots.

Banks scored 16 of her 21 points in the fourth quarter as the Bruins went 3-for-6 from long range. Dayton was 0-for-6 from distance in the fourth.

The Flyers outpaced Belmont 41-37 in the second half behind 46.7 percent (14-of-30) shooting.

Banks added three rebounds, a trio of assists and a steal to her point total.

Dayton was led by starting center Fatima Ibrahim, who scored 17 points and brought down a game-high 11 boards. The Flyers also got 15 points from starting guard Nayo Lear and another 14 points from Leung. Of Note
