COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont University baseball team (0-4) traveled to in-state foe Tennessee Tech (5-0) for the first midweek game. The Bruins jumped out to a 7-3 after three innings but gave Tennessee Tech too many two-out gifts at the plate. The Golden Eagle offense came alive, rallied, and won the game, 10-8.
Scoring Action
- Belmont scored the game's first run on a Ty Allen groundout to third, Pete Daniel scored.
- Gardner Lawrence gave Belmont a 2-0 lead on a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Sprockett.
- The Bruins added three more runs in the second. Daniel hit an RBI single to right center, a failed pickoff attempt at third scored Galason; Allen hit an RBI single. Belmont led 5-0 going into the bottom of the second.
- Tennessee Tech scored three unearned runs on Zach Hernandez in the home half of the second; Blake Barton committed a two-out error in left field. Jordan Zuger relieved Hernandez with the bases loaded, walked a runner in, and struck out the final batter. Belmont remained in front, 5-3.
- In the top of the third, Daniel drove in Galason and Lawrence on a two-out single through the left side. The Belmont lead stood at 7-3 midway through three innings.
- Tennessee Tech's Carter Vrabel hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third. The Golden Eagles trailed 7-4 entering the fourth.
- Another Belmont error allowed for Tennessee Tech to score another unearned run in the bottom of the fourth. Tennessee Tech's deficit was cut to two, down 7-5.
- The Golden Eagles scored three unanswered runs between the fifth and seventh innings and took the lead on a fielder's choice from Mack Whitcomb, 8-7.
- Belmont's Mike Sprockett gave life to the dugout with a leadoff solo home run in the eighth. Sprockett's first home run of the season tied the game at 8-8.
- Ethan Harden came in to pitch for the Bruins in the bottom half of the eighth. After two quick at-bats, Landon Smelser smashed a double down the line to clear the bases. The late heroics of Smelser lifted the Golden Eagles to a 10-8 victory.
