ST. LOUIS – After a performance befitting of March this past Saturday versus Murray State, Belmont University women's basketball's
Tuti Jones has been named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week. Announced by the conference office Monday afternoon, Jones earns her second career MVC Player of the Week award.
Â
The graduate guard was phenomenal in leading the Bruins to a key MVC victory over the rival Racers Saturday afternoon inside the Curb Event Center. In a matchup of Valley leaders, Jones recorded her first double-double of the season and third of her career with a career-high tying 29 points and season-high 10 rebounds. She went 10-for-15 from the field, was 4-for-7 from beyond the arc and a perfect 5-for-5 at the free-throw line. Additionally, Jones came up with a pair of steals and distributed four assists.
Â
The Troy, Alabama (Charles Henderson HS), native provided Belmont with one of the most impressive and important shots of the game, nailing a deep wing three-pointer as time expired in the third quarter. Her triple made it a one-point game and gave the Bruins all the momentum heading into the pivotal fourth quarter.
Â
With Jones' outstanding play, Belmont outpaced Murray State 96-89 for its eighth-straight win. The combined 185 points tied for the third-highest scoring women's game in Curb Event Center history.
Â
Jones was also named MVC Player of the Week on March 11 last year.
Â
Sitting atop the Valley with a 9-1 mark in league play, the Bruins hit the road this weekend. Belmont travels to Valparaiso Friday and the University of Illinois Chicago Sunday. Tipoff between the Bruins and Beacons in Valparaiso, Indiana, Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m. from the Athletics-Recreation Center. Both MVC road games will be broadcast on
ESPN+.
