NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont (8-15, 0-1 MVC) began MVC play Friday evening against Illinois State (7-12, 1-0 MVC) at E.S. Rose Park. Illinois State jumped out to an early lead, but Belmont responded with five unanswered runs after the fifth inning. Belmont's comeback effort fell short as Illinois State prevailed 8-5.
Scoring Action
- Illinois State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Judah Morris hit a two-run home run to left and Brayden Bakes followed with a solo shot to right field.
- The Redbirds hit back-to-back home runs to begin the third inning. Daniel Pacella hit a leadoff solo home run. Morris crushed his second home run of the game to center field. The Redbirds added another run on an infield single from Luke Stulga. Illinois State's lead grew to 6-0.
- Illinois State added two more runs in the fifth inning. Josh Outlaw brought in two runs on a single through the right side. The Redbirds extended their lead to 8-0.
- Belmont's offense came to life in the sixth inning. Pete Daniel led off the inning with his second base hit. The Bruins eventually worked the bases loaded after a walk and hit batter. Landon Godsey brought home a pair of runs on a single to center field. Mike Sprockett hit a sacrifice fly the next at-bat. The Bruins trailed 8-3 moving into the seventh inning.
- The Bruins' bats stayed hot in the seventh inning. Jake Maddox led off with a walk. Gardner Lawrence doubled down the left-field line. Daniel clutched up and doubled down the left-field line and scored both runners. Belmont cut the deficit to 8-5.

- Pete Daniel led the Bruins with three hits, including a double that brought home two runs in the sixth inning.
- Gardner Lawrence doubled and scored a run.
- Landon Godsey went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
- Cade Granzow – left the bases loaded in the top of the sixth inning.
- Jonathon Van Ness set new career high in strikeouts (5) and innings pitched (3). The freshman retired the first eight batters he faced and left two runners on base in the ninth inning.
