Baseball Falls to Southern Illinois in Extra Innings

Bruins Suffer 5-4 Loss to Open Series in Carbondale

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Belmont (16-24, 6-7 MVC) and Southern Illinois (25-12, 8-5 MVC) kicked off their series Thursday night at Itchy Jones Stadium. After falling behind 4-1, the Bruins found a way to tie the game and force extra innings. Despite Belmont's efforts, the Salukis walked it off with a 5-4 win.
 
Scoring Action
  • Belmont scored the first run of the game in the second inning. Blake Barton hit a one-out single and advanced on a ball thrown into the Belmont dugout. Jake Maddox drew a walk and Barton moved up to third on a wild pitch. Gardner Lawrence laid a bunt down the first base line to easily score Barton.
  • Southern Illinois responded with four runs on three hits in the bottom of the second. Jordan Bach drew a bases-loaded walk. Matt Schark cleared the bases on a double to right-center field. The Salukis led 4-1 after the second inning.
  • Mike Sprockett reignited Belmont's offense with his first triple of the season to lead off the fourth inning. Maddox hit an RBI single up the middle to score Sprockett. The Bruins worked the bases loaded on a single from Lawrence and Michael Lareau getting hit by a pitch. Pete Daniel hit a chopper up the middle to score Maddox. A costly baserunning error by Lareau and a ground out from Charlie Davis ended the inning. Belmont cut Southern Illinois' lead to 4-3 moving into the bottom of the fourth.
  • Ty Allen smashed a solo home run to lead off the top of the seventh inning. Allen's eighth home run of the season tied the game, 4-4.
  • In the 10th inning, Gabe Petrucelli reached first base on a walk. Cecil Lofton followed with the first SIU hit since the sixth inning, and advanced Petrucelli to third Matthew Simay hit a hard ground ball that allowed Petrucelli to score and win the game.

  • Zane Brown allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out two batters.
  • Mike Sprockett went 2-for-5 and hit his first triple of the season.
  • Michael Lareau was a perfect 3-for-3 and reached base four times
  • Ty Allen hit his eighth home run of the season.
  • Gardner Lawrence had an RBI sacrifice bunt.
  • Logan Brock retired all four batters he faced out of the bullpen.
  • Andrew Perry tossed 2.1 innings, allowed two hits and struck out three Salukis.
