Bruins Fall in Season Opener to Vanderbilt

Belmont Volleyball Drops First Game of the Season in Hard-Fought Match Against the Commodores

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont University women's volleyball team dropped its 2025 season opener to Vanderbilt, 1-3, in a spirited outdoor match Friday evening on Wyatt Lawn.

The Bruins showed resilience throughout the four-set contest (17-25, 15-25, 25-18, 21-25), highlighted by a dominant third set win.

Belmont controlled Set 3 from the start, earning a 25-18 victory behind 11 kills, four aces, and three blocks.

What's Bruin

  • Brooke Gilleland (Sr, OH) led the Bruins with 15 kills, alongside nine digs.

  • Lilly Lutz (Sr, L.) held down the defense with a team-high 13 digs.

  • Bella Mathis (Sr, MB) posted a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage.

  • Freshmen debuts: Jordan Czajkowski and Erin McMullen each saw their first collegiate minutes.

  • The Bruins' depth showed as five players came off the bench to make key contributions.

Up Next

  • Belmont returns home to host Seton Hall on Saturday, Aug. 30, at 5 p.m. CT, followed by UT Martin on Sunday, Aug. 31, at 2 p.m. CT. Both matches will be played inside the Curb Event Center.
