SEATTLE – In its second match of the opening weekend of the season, the Belmont University men's tennis team was defeated 6-1 at the University of Washington Saturday afternoon on the West Coast. Sophomore
Morgan Woodson provided the Bruins (0-2) with their lone point as he earned a straight-set win on court six at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle.
Â
The host Huskies (2-0) won at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to secure the doubles point before taking five of six singles matches.
Â
Both junior
Stefan Vedovelli at third singles and sophomore
Charlie Robin at second singles took their opponents to deciding third-set super tiebreakers, but neither were able to come away with a win. Against Washington's Rohan Belday, Vedovelli won a second set tiebreak to force the extra super tiebreaker. Robin took a set lead on the Huskies' Stephane Kamendje with a 6-4 opening set win but was returned the favor in the second stanza.
Â
At the sixth spot, Woodson topped Washington's Daniel Bien 7-6, 6-4. He prevailed 7-3 in the first set tiebreaker before closing it out in the second set.
Â
The duo of Robin and graduate
Will Ecklund did not finish their match at second doubles. Trailing the Huskies' Kamendje and Nikola Plavsic 5-4, Robin and Ecklund were up 30-15 in the 10th game.
Â
"It wasn't necessarily the way we wanted to start our season," commented head coach
Jeff Cero. "But learning from these weekends is as important as the good ones. We definitely have our work cut out for us as a program to reach our goals and be the team we want to be."
