NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont University men's soccer head coach David Costa has announced the promotion of experienced assistant Cam Olson to associate head coach. Entering his fifth year with the Bruins, Olson has played an integral part to Belmont's success over the last four seasons.
"We are excited to recognize Cam with a well-deserved title change to associate head coach," spoke coach Costa. "Over the last four years he has played a significant role in every facet of our program. He is a great relationship builder and leader and epitomizes the values of Belmont Athletics. We look forward to many successes in the future with him at Belmont."
During Olson's time in the Music City, the Bruins have won 28 matches, earned 20 draws and posted three winning seasons. With Olson's tutelage, Belmont has developed seven All-Missouri Valley Conference players, including the Bruins' first two first-team selections in
Dylan Steely and
Brad Dildy, and a pair of all-region performers (Case Cox and Steely).
"I am incredibly grateful to wake up every day and work alongside this staff, administration, and our players," commented Olson. "From the moment Kate and I arrived at Belmont, it has truly felt like home – a place where we've been able to grow our family and build meaningful relationships with the people around us. I'm thankful for the trust and support of coach Costa, Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Engagement
Josh Ward, and Vice President, Director of Athletics
Scott Corley. I'm excited to continue serving our student-athletes as we compete for championships."
Olson was instrumental in helping Louisville City FC star forward Jansen Wilson (2022-23) flourish during his two seasons at Belmont and has been a crucial recruiter for coach Costa. In addition to recruiting, Olson has played a key role in the Bruins' match scouting, tactical planning and physical development.
With Olson's instruction, Belmont made significant steps this past fall as the Bruins went undefeated through their first 11 matches of the season for the first time in program history. He helped lead Belmont to a school-record 13-match unbeaten streak spanning from late October of 2024 to Oct. 12, 2025, and the Bruins' defense was one of the best in the nation in 2025. Conceding just 13 goals the entire season, the fifth-fewest in the country, Belmont posted the 18th-best goals against average (0.765) nationally. Allowing multiple goals only twice during the year, the Bruins recorded six road shutouts.
In Olson's fourth season, Belmont earned the right to host an MVC Championship match for the first time since joining the Valley.
Prior to arriving in Nashville, Olson spent the previous six seasons at fellow NCAA Division I men's soccer programs Bucknell, Vermont and Xavier.
During the 2021 season, Olson served as an assistant coach at Bucknell after spending time as an assistant at 2024 national champion Vermont during the unique 2020-21 season, which was played in the spring of 2021 due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. With Olson on staff, the Catamounts received top-25 votes.
For four seasons, Olson played a vital role at Xavier where he was an assistant coach during the Musketeers' 2019 campaign. The program's director of operations from January 2016 to the summer of 2019, Olson spent two seasons on Xavier's staff during Costa's time as an associate head coach. Helping the Musketeers to 33 matches wins, numerous results against ranked opponents, a No. 11 national ranking, and the seventh-best recruiting class in the nation in 2019, Olson mentored a pair of MLS Draft picks and nine total players who went on to sign professional contracts.
Before beginning his collegiate coaching career at Division III Franklin College in Franklin, Indiana, Olson enjoyed a four-year playing career at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania, where he was a four-year starter from 2012-15. He finished in the top 10 in school history in assists, earned All-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) accolades, led the Gators to a top-20 national ranking, and was the team's offensive MVP.
Olson also spent time at Lancaster University in Lancaster, England, and was selected to compete internationally in both England and Scotland as a junior player with the Olympic Development Program Region I team. While at Lancaster, Olson scored the game-winning goal versus York to earn the 2014 Roses Tournament Championship, the largest inter-university sports tournament in Europe.
A native of Boston, Olson earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from Allegheny in 2015 before adding a master's degree in coaching education and athlete development from Xavier in 2016.
Olson owns a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) 'B' License. He is also a certified personal trainer through the American Council on Exercise (ACE).
