BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Securing their third shutout of the season, the Belmont University men's soccer team earned a scoreless draw at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Tuesday night at PNC Field. The road result completes the Bruins' non-conference schedule.
For the first time this season, Belmont (5-4-2) has gone unbeaten for three consecutive matches. The Bruins have earned a result in four of their last five matches.
Despite being outshot 19-6 in Birmingham, Alabama, Belmont threatened with its chances. Freshman goalkeeper
Brody Sucher claimed his second clean sheet of the year and made a career-high seven saves for the third time.
Five of the Bruins' six shots came in the second half, including three promising looks for reigning Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week
Paul Claes Nielsen. Late in the 86th minute, both sophomore midfielder Claes Nielsen and junior midfielder
Emmanuel Aranda had back-to-back hard-swung shots that sailed high.
Belmont defended a short free kick from just above the 18-yard box in the closing seconds.
UAB (4-3-3) tested the Bruins' defense early and often, recording seven shots and earning three corner kicks in the initial 30 minutes of action. Belmont, however, looked dangerous on its first opportunity as the Bruins' lone shot on target came on their first attempt in the 31st minute.
The Blazers were held to only one additional corner the remainder of the match.
Belmont limited UAB to three shots on goal in the second half, which all took place between the 63rd and 80th minutes.
The Bruins had just one corner in each half.
Of Note
- Belmont and UAB met during the regular season for the first time since September of 2013. The two teams played preseason exhibition matches each of the last four seasons.
- Sucher has tallied at least five saves in six of his last seven matches.
