NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont University volleyball team (8-8, 5-0 MVC) remained undefeated in Missouri Valley Conference play Thursday night, sweeping Southern Illinois inside the Curb Event Center. The Bruins earned their third consecutive home sweep of the season and extended their winning streak to 15 straight sets.
Belmont vs. Southern Illinois (W, 3-0)
Belmont opened the match with a kill from Sydnee Nelson and battled Southern Illinois through an early back-and-forth stretch. The Bruins began to pull away behind kills from across the lineup, building a 15-9 advantage. Nelson continued to lead the offensive effort, recording her fifth kill to help Belmont reach a 20-13 lead. The Bruins maintained control late in the set, with Brenna Kauffeld delivering a kill for set point before Nelson sealed the frame with an ace, 25-15.
The second set featured another competitive start, with the Salukis taking a narrow advantage before Belmont responded. A service ace from Mya Bolton evened the score at 10-10, and the Bruins began to build momentum behind an Erin McMullen kill and Southern Illinois errors. McMullen added back-to-back kills as Belmont continued to push ahead. The Bruins looked dominant offensively and defensively making great touches back row and at the net. Alivia Keegan delivered a kill late in the set, and Lucy Kay capitalized on a Saluki overpass to put the Bruins at set point. Keegan finished the frame with a dump to give Belmont a 25-20 victory and a 2-0 lead.
Southern Illinois kept the third set close early, with the teams tied at 5-5 before a big block from Keegan and Kay helped Belmont respond at the net. The Salukis then put together a run, but the Bruins rallied behind Nelson's serving, including an ace that sparked an eight-point run. Belmont pulled ahead and reached 20 points first, with Kay adding a key block to bring the Bruins to 23. Nelson recorded her 10th kill of the match to seal the set, 25-20, and complete the sweep.
