TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - - Behind phenomenal defensive play, Belmont University women's soccer defeated Indiana State 1-0 on Sunday at Memorial Stadium.

The Bruins exploded off the opening kickoff generating a corner kick and a shot in the first 15 seconds of the match.

Miscommunication from the Sycamores led to an own goal that gave Belmont the lead in just the eighth minute.

Greta Genie had an excellent first half making two full stretch saves to keep Indiana State scoreless.

The Bruins took advantage of the own goal from Indiana State, controlling momentum with the lead for just about the entire first half.

Belmont played a very gritty first half and continued their physical play throughout the second half both on and off the ball.

Defensively the Bruins played just as well as they have all season refusing to give the Sycamores any chance to gain momentum.

The Bruins continued to dominate possession throughout the second half, controlling the match and allowing themselves to play at their pace.

Thanks to a strong defensive stand in the final minutes of play, Belmont were able to hang onto their 1-0 lead and come away with three conference points.

Genie saved all three shots taken by Indiana State to earn back to back clean sheets.

The Bruins (4-8-4) return to action Thursday for their final regular season game on the road against Murray State. Match time is set for 1 p.m. CT from Cutchin Field. The match will be broadcasted on ESPN+ and the ESPN app.
